CES 2012: Blast from the Past with Classic Gaming from Hyperkin
Posted 9:05 am on Monday, January 16th, 2012 by Chris Del CastilloAh, nothing beats the good ol’ days when you had a Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and the NES. I’m the type of guy that would go to garage sales, eBay or game stores and still look for classics like Secret of Mana and Earthbound. What if I were to tell you that you can have the best of the Super NES, Genesis, and NES with a turn of the knob. Thanks to Hyperkin, it’s a reality with the Retron 3.
The Retron 3 console comes with 2 wireless controllers that look like the Sega Saturn controllers, but honestly, I could care less about those. Thankfully, the console has two slots where you can plug in controllers from the original system. The Retron 3 runs for about $69.99, and it’s something that I have seen at my local Play N Trade a few times.
Does anybody remember the Sega Nomad? It was a 16-bit handheld gaming device made by Sega that lets you play your Genesis cartridges on the go. Well, Hyperkin did the same for SNES with the SupaBoy. It looks like an SNES controller, with a slot on top for your cartridge, and can double as a console, allowing you to plug into your TV and play from there. With the AC adapter and some rechargeable batteries, it’s a bit pricey at $79.99, but it’s a pretty awesome toy for those hardcore Nintendo fans. Both ideas seem great, but you still need to go out and get the games and classic controllers for the full experience.
Hyperkin has one more trick in its classic sleeve. The return of the Game Genie! It was big back in the early 90s, and from then on, every console would have some sort of cheat device that allows you to unlock some crazy cheats like insane abilities for characters. Eventually, the Game Genie and its successor, the Action Replay, would eventually disappear. The new Game Genie will support the DS/3DS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and it will allow you to cheat and back up saves.
Hyperkin’s website also shows off Nintendo and Genesis-inspired handheld consoles similar to the SupaBoy, so it’s nice to know the classics still gets some love.
