CES 2012 – Dropped Your Phone in the Toilet? P2i Could Have Saved You

P2i is not a standard household name, but the recently released Motorola Droid Razr should definitely be. All Droid Razr’s that leave the factory (even the one in your hand), are treated with P2i’s Aridion technology that protects it from corrosion and water damage. The first we’ve heard of P2i, we were told of a story where a phone was dropped in a toilet, but survived. This is where the interest originated from.
NerdReactor.com was treated to a live demonstration of the P2i treatment on tissue paper. Two seemingly similar pieces of tissue paper, but one that would not absorb any liquid at all. Dr. Stephan Coulson, CTO of P2i, submerged the test samples himself into a bowl of liquid. While one soaked in the water, the other simply beaded it off. One may ask how long the treatment lasts. The answer was that these treated tissue papers will never absorb boogers again since the P2i binds to the fibers of the napkins.
While electronic companies did not question that a water repelling treatment would be effective, the real doubt was if electronic circuitry could survive the treatment process. The treatment involves a vacuum chamber that applies the P2i into every crevice into a device. The result is a fully functional device much like the Motorola Droid Razr with no negative effects on the circuitry. The commercial application is very well proven and consumers can expect future products like the Motorola Xoom3 to be protected.
A fun question to ponder, can I waterproof myself, a human being? Dr. Stephen Coulson entertained this idea briefly and responded that if I am able to survive the vacuum chamber without passing out or exploding, then I could be the first human test subject. As much as I would want to relive Total Recall, I think I’ll have to pass. Jumping into water and creating a self contained bubble does seem pretty neat though.
