Bane Will Mmmrmmff Rrrrrrmmmph in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

The recently released trailer for The Dark Knight Rises had Bane speaking clearly, but when I watched the Dark Knight Rises prologue in front of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol on IMAX, Bane’s voice was hard to understand most of the time. The group I was watching this with also had a hard time deciphering what he was trying to say. You can blame it on the plane noise, the mask, and the accent.

Now it seems that many are also complaining about Bane’s unintelligible voice, including Warner Bros. For a blockbuster franchise, of course they’re worried. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Someone at Warner Bros. wanted Christopher Nolan to change the sound mix, but Nolan says that he’ll only slightly alter the sound, not rework it.

“Chris wants the audience to catch up and participate rather than push everything at them. He doesn’t dumb things down,” says one high-level exec, declining to be named. “You’ve got to pedal faster to keep up.”

I’m all for playing catch up, but I do hope that his voice has been altered to match what we can hear in the theatrical trailer. “When Gotham is ashes, you have my permission to die”.
