Nerd Reactor Introduces ‘Flame Reactor’ for the Geeky and Gay

In an effort to really start getting to the hearts of certain niches in our nerdy world, the team at Nerd Reactor is releasing its newest feature category, Flame Reactor, which will cover all things geeky and LGBT related. For those who do not know, LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered. There’s the increasingly popular LGBTQQIA (… queer, questioning, inter-sex, and allied) but it’s far too long for me to type over and over again.

Queek: A queek is a person who is queer who is also simultaneously a geek.

I was first introduced to Nerd Reactor about a year ago, but not to cover gay-related nerd events. After hanging around the staff as time went on, I’ve come to find out that this group of guys (and girls) are just really awesome, to say the very least. John Spartan, the editor, and I got to talking after I had run into a few websites that centered around the gay-nerd theme, and proposed to him a gay version of our site. John thought the idea was great, because it is important to note that there are subgroups and hidden niches within the geek world. After discussing it with the main contributors, the guys decided that instead of my proposed idea of a sister site, they wanted Flame Reactor to be fully integrated within the main site. My eyes filled with tears of joy.

Now, what will make this feature different from the existing gay nerd sites out there? Well, for one, I think our voice is much stronger and able to fully integrate nerdy and gay themes. Whereas other sites have articles where some are gay, and the others are nerd-related, here at Nerd Reactor, we are committed to publishing industry-related posts that can straddle the two themes. (See what I just did there?) Also, we want everyone to feel like they are a part of the community, and not segregate people into their little corners (you know why the Civil War happened, right?).

As Flame Reactor continues to grow with Nerd Reactor, we are making plans to further segment categories centered around more specific themes (spoiler alert: cosplaying).

This is not only a progressively courageous step for Nerd Reactor and me, but a good step towards tying our community even closer together. I mean, yeah, we could have just released a category that simply said “LGBT” but what’s the fun in that?

As some of you have already noticed, we’ve released some articles with gay themes. You can read some of the most notable ones about Skyrim, the lovable Zachary Quinto, and Bent-Con here.

Its a cool idea, as long as you keep everything intergrated. I never like seeing separate section just for certain groups. Why cant it just be under one label, “geek”. A gay geek is not really different from a straight geek. Im not gay, and never had a problem with gay’s, my father-in-law is gay, and honestly there isnt really very much difference in our interests, mostly in a cosplay picture, im checkin out the girl, he’s check out the guy, thats about it, lol.

Its kind of sad that there has to be a special designation, as if Joe Straight Sex is scared he’ll become gay from seeing a man and a rainbow in teh same picture(honestly probably means there not sure in there own sexuallity, lol)

You’re very much right, Reboot. Every LGBT person, including me, has always struggled to become just one of the rest. And yes, we simply can just introduce gay related articles into the site itself, which is what we’ve been doing already with some past articles. But with the rise in gay-themed comics, anime, and conventions, I felt that it was necessary to give it some kind of home on our website. Like I had mentioned in the article, I initially wanted a separate website for gay nerds, but the staff encouraged me to just integrate the theme into the main site, which basically means every article will still go through the main homepage and our Facebook feed, still reaching our original audience. (So yeah, Joe Straight Sex will have to deal with seeing a rainbow here and there).

But I really appreciate your comment, and it shows that our audience at Nerd Reactor is just as open to this as we are. Thanks!

As a Canadian, I’m constantly hearing American conservatives carry on about how gay marriage will destroy the institution of marriage or family or whatever. I would just like to quickly say that Canada and America are very similar societies, we are one of only ten countries in the world to completely legalize gay marriage, and it’s been around since 2005. Where is this supposed destruction to our families? I think enough time has passed for us to atleast notice something. <3

The issue in california was what we call “earwigs”. There was stuff attached to the last prop that really had nothing to do with the marriage act, but if passed, it would have passed other laws that would have been bad (aka the earwigs).

I always tell people, instead of rioting in the streets, are freaking out, they need to get better organized and bring up a professional court case. My father-in-law and I were talking about this, and he says he wasnt surprised that prop 8 went the way it did. In his words, “just look at the pride festival, and see why they scare the crap out of the rest of the population”.

Now im not saying pride festival is wrong, but they have to realize, EVERYONE is watching, and its hard to argue equal rights when there preforming acts that anyone else on any other day would have been arrested for.

Bleh, sorry for the speech, it just bugs me that a few gay people, are ruining it for the rest of the gay community. Sadly when people see a picture of some deviants on the street preforming acts that are otherwise illegal, it puts a bad blanket reputation for the rest of them. I can talk for days about this, so ill stop now, lol.

I know exactly what you mean with the Pride Parades. I actually don’t attend them because such overt sexuality makes me uncomfortable. It just gives off a bad impression of the community as a whole.

Im glad to hear that, same with my father in law, he doesnt attend it for the same reason as you, not to say everyone there is up to nefarious activities, but i think that event needs an overhaul. Pride fair was ment to show society that there is nothing to be afraid of and to not be afraid to be open. Sadly its turned into a pretty bad day.

I’m a proud swishy, straight ally of the gay community; I’m also a girl that happens to be a geek and a gamer (and a goth! What’s with all the “g’s”?). I usually hang around on gaygamer.net as one of the resident hags, but it’s always good to see support from other mainstream sites. Like the poster above me mentioned, as long as things aren’t segregated, I think this is a very positive step in the right direction. Count me in as a supporter and fan!
