Comic Hit List: Wolverine and the X-Men #1

The line in the sand has been drawn and sides have been chosen with the X-Men since the events of the Schism story arc. Those who chose to side with Cyclops have decided to stay on the island of Utopia in San Francisco and make stand as a peacekeeping force for mutant kind which will be featured in the pages of Uncanny X-Men. Meanwhile those who chose to follow Wolverine have returned to their roots at ‘The Xavier Institute for Higher Learning’ which has now been renamed ‘Jean Gray School for Higher Learning’. I would not be surprised to see X-Fans wearing Team Cyclops or Team Wolverine shirts at next year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

While Uncanny X-Men seem to have more of a serious adult storyline Wolverine and the X-Men looks to have more of a relaxed atmosphere similar to that of Generation X and New X-Men (post House of M). This is some surprising work from writer Jason Aaron (Ghost Rider and Punisher MAX) whose previous projects had more of a serious and darker tone while his work in this title had a more light hearted feel to it. In this first issue we see the new headmaster Wolverine and new headmistress Kitty Pryde dealing with school inspectors who are skeptical of this new school full of ‘dangerous’ young mutants. As they are shown around the campus everything that could go wrong pretty much does. Such as danger room technology malfunctioning to students causing trouble. And if that wasn’t enough the new Black King of the Hellfire Club Kade Kilgore comes a-knocking to brag that he was the mastermind behind the events of Schism as well as promising to destroy the school. Fast forward a bit to the end of the issue we see a giant stone monster appearing out of nowhere and begins to eat the school. Not too boring way to kick of the start of the school semester wouldn’t you say?

Issue one of Wolverine and the X-Men has a fun vibe that looks to be an interesting read for fans of the X-Men. We see a lot of growth in the character of Kitty Pryde since her orginial days as an X-Men. The villain of Kade Kilgore also looks to be a perfect foil to the newly established X-School. As usual you either like or hate Chris Bachalo‘s (Uncanny X-Men and Generation X) quirky animated art style, myself I acquired a taste for it during his days on Generation X but I know of others who don’t particularly care for it. I also especially enjoyed the extras included in the last couple of pages in the comic which listed the faculty and activities offered at the new school (Gambit is teaching Sex Ed). Overall I say grab yourself a copy this looks to be a fun read.
