James Cameron has been quoted in an IGN interview as saying:
“Eventually people will see enough scope to be able to see how the MMO will work, but that’s going to have to be launched…the timing of that is going to have to be carefully orchestrated with the release of the second and third film because we don’t want to be giving away elements before the fact.”
Whoa, whoa, whoa, Cameron! I can see that royal flush you’re flashing around! Seriously though, did he just confirm that there will definitely be an MMO based on the universe of his billion-dollar-making Avatar franchise? While the movie did make over a billion dollars world-wide, it’s arguable that what made it so successful was the novelty of a beautifully crafted, 3-D movie. Though I’m sure the director’s past credits didn’t hurt. If this is in fact in production, can it be successful? Will they be able to create a vast world of characters and interesting creatures to interact with throughout a multitude of days of gameplay to keep the average MMO player occupied? Who knows, but it would be interesting to see if Cameron’s crown jewel could entice a few million non-gamers into gamer-dom.
Industry Gamers spoke with the Bioware duo, Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk, and this is what they had to say concerning a Mass Effect MMO:
“I think once The Old Republic is done, we’ll take a fresh look at the market. And we’ll have learned a lot. While making it, you learn an enormous amount. It’s one of the nice things about having these properties in our back pocket… If we want to use something we own as a source for a game, it’s easy to do. So yeah, you never know. We’ve got this giant product to launch, but once that’s done we’ll consider next steps.”
They went on to say that they believe that they could create an MMO based on Mass Effect, and get a better profit margin considering the royalties they’re going to have to pay Lucas Arts for their soon-to-be-out, The Old Republic, an MMO based on the Star Wars universe. Given the relatively fantastic story seen in Mass Effect 1 and 2, even I would be interested in a Mass Effect MMO, and I am not too much a fan of MMOs given how much time they require.
What say you, fellow gamers? Would you be interested in either of these possibilities? From the sound of it, we’ll be seeing both of them come to fruition within five years’ time.
