Sony Announces Two New PlayStation Tablet Machines

At  recent conference, Sony announced that they will be putting out two tablet devices this coming Fall. Sony has today unveiled its two tablet devices that will be capable of (officially) playing PlayStation games, currently known as the S1 and S2 internally.

The S1 tablet, which is powered by the Nvidia Tegra chipset, is tapered on one end like a folden news paper. It will be the first Sony tablet device to carry the PlayStation Certified label, which means it can play both PS1 games and other Sony-approved titles specifically for mobile platforms. It will have a 9.4-inch screen and will be home to the Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS.

Here is a full list of the specifications:

  • 9.4- inch Single Screen
  • Screen Resolution 1280*800
  • Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS
  • Nvidia Tegra 2 Processor
  • Front & Rear Facing Camera
  • Custom UI
  • Sports Cross connectivity
  • Swift Web Browser
  • Remote control for Sony Products
  • PlayStation Certified

The S2 tablet, however, will be a clamshell design that is similar to the Nintendo DS.

Here are the specifications for the S2:

  • 5.5 inch Dual Screen
  • Tegra 2 Processor
  • Front & Rear Facing Camera
  • Custom Book Style UI – Custom Email APP, EReader and more
  • 1024X480 Display Resolution
  • PlayStation Certified

As you can see, the S2 is not that much different from the S1, but the clamshell design makes it unique in the aspect that it will function much like a Nintendo DS, with the bottom screen being touch screen for controller input, and the top screen will be nothing but actions.

There is no words on pricing just yet, and like I said these two beautifully designed machines will be available this coming fall. Both will have access to Sony’s online music service and it’s e-book stores. Both system will come with wi-fi, 3G, and 4G connectivity.

and hey, if you are a big Sony customer, getting a S1 won’t be too bad since it will be able to act as a controller for all of the Sony products you have.
