Japan vs. TV Tokyo and Nihon Ad Systems… It’s Time to Duel in Court

You won’t be seeing any Dark Magicians or Synchro summons from either side, but instead you’ll see a huge lawsuit from TV Tokyo and Nihon Ads against Saturday morning cartoon dubbers 4Kids, and the termination of the current contracts of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime.

TV Tokyo and Nihon Ads say that 4kids has been very sneaky in how they reported how much they were making off the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime. In the contracts, 4Kids has to pay 50% of the gross income earned off Yu-Gi-Oh! to the Japanese companies. They failed to mention a few of the ways they earned some money until they were audited, as per agreement.

With the audit, it was found that 4Kids had a “secret” agreement with Funimation to make extra money while trying to keep it off the books, but in the end failed. It won’t be pretty as it’s stated about $4.8 Million dollars and is owed to both companies and any contracts are now terminated.

This spells trouble for 4Kids, as their previous numbers have been in red and the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise is one of the biggest cash cow for 4Kids, whose others cartoons include Sonic X, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Magi Nation and Dragon Ball Z Kai, but they have stated that they are ready to file chapter 11 if they lose.
