Gallifrey One’s Catch 22: Islands of MysteryPosted 10:10 pm on Friday, February 25th, 2011 by Michael Pao
Just last weekend was the twenty second annual Doctor Who convention ‘Gallifrey One’ which is held each February in the LAX Marriot. It was an extremely successful weekend for the fan friendly convention as it broke previous years records with over 2,000 registered attendees. This year’s guests of honor included the fifth Doctor Peter Davison, Janet Fielding (Tegan Joanka), Sarah Sutton (Nyssa), Producer Tracie Simpson, Frazer Hines (Jamie McCrimmon), Matthew Waterhouse (Adric), John Leeson (Voice of K-9), John Levene (Sergeant Benton), Cush Jumbo (Lois), Ian McNeice (Winston Churchill), just to name a few. From Thursday evening into Monday morning the hotel lobby or ‘LobbyCon’ was the place to be, which was an unofficial 24 hour convention party where everybody seems to be. A place where fans and guests alike swap stories and pretty much just hang out and have a good time.
This year Gallifrey One even attracted the attention of the Late Late Show host and Doctor Who fan Craig Ferguson who sent Chris Hardwick in his tenth Doctor finest as a special correspondent. The segment will air Monday night on February 28th.
The dealers room offered a wide array of Doctor Who memorabilia ranging from the classic series to the new and a vast collection of Big Finish Audio adventures which stretched across multiple tables. One of my favorite aspects of the convention was interacting with the many costumers whom milled about the entire downstairs area of the LAX Marriot. Tenth Doctors and Amy Ponds were easily some of the more popular costumes with a number of Deleks roaming the floor looking to exterminate their foes. The convention also featured a number of panels which delved into the Doctor Who mythos which included subjects such as costuming, prop building, writing, and etc.
The Masquerade of Mandragora XXI the annual costume contest hosted by Patrick ‘Gilligan’ Beckstead and Tadao ‘The Skipper’ Tomomatsu was quite entertaining with participants giving nods to both the classic and new series. The highlight though I must say was the absolutely hilarious ‘Just a Minute’ segment hosted by Tony Lee (Doctor Who/Graphic Novelist) and Ken Deep (Co-Host of Doctor Who Podshock) with guests Richard Dinnick (Doctor Who/Novelist), Emma Fletcher (Actress & Writer), Ian McNeice (Doctor Who/Winston Churchill), and Chase Masterson (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine/Leeta). I nearly split my sides as McNeice went on about how big his ‘U.N.I.T.’ was.
Some sad news though Nicholas Courtney the actor who portrayed Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart passed away just a few days ago.
