The End of DVD Rental Is Near as Netflix Announces Streaming-Only Plan

Netflix has launched its streaming-only plan to the masses for the price of $7.99 a month. Its streaming media service has been watched more than the mail-in DVDs, which is why it wants to do away with sending out DVDs in bulk and focus more on online-streaming content.

“We are now primarily a streaming video company delivering a wide selection of TV shows and films over the Internet,” Netflix Chief Executive Reed Hastings said.

The mail-in DVD plans have increased because of this, like the $5 increase for having five DVDs sent out at the same time or $1 increase if you want just one DVD sent out a month. Well, if they are to focus primarily on web-streaming TV and movie content, then they better have a better selection than what they have now. I mean, only Lost Season 5 is streaming? We’ll see if they can truly get content rights for streaming media from all their DVD selections.

With this trend happening now, it’s not looking good for the future of DVD rentals.
