Hughes Brothers Confirm No Zac Efron for AKIRA

You could almost hear a gigantic sigh of relief from the anime community. Today, the Hughes Brothers shot down the rumor that High School Musical star Zac Efron would play the role of Keneda in their upcoming live action adaptation of AKIRA. The directors did not however comment on the rumor of Morgan Freeman as General Shikishima.

Some of me is relieved but at the same time I feel bad for Zac. It seems like it’s going to take a pretty risky role for him to break away from his Disney image to be taken as a serious actor.

When the first rumors of a Death Note live action arose, I was first to suggest him for the part of Yagami Light. Immediately my idea was shot down by many fans. To me, Zac Efron would be perfect for the role. Light was a good looking kid who did well in school, was well liked by everybody and was the last person anyone would suspect to be a mass murder. You can’t tell me that Zac doesn’t fit the profile.

Still no word on who will be in the AKIRA live action or if it will even be made for that matter but we’ll keep you posted.
